The Seasonality of Live Foods!

Prior to flake, pellets and frozen foods, live foods were often the only way to feed tropical fishes. But the selection was limited, to start with..

Early on in the days of keeping fish, Daphnia was a staple for many aquarists, usually to feed and condition their goldfish. In fact, Daphnia was so highly prized that 'Daphnia Wars' would often take place between aquarists, jostling to retain the rights to 'their' Daphnia ponds. Over time, as alternative foods became available, this aggression between fish breeders reduced, as did the size and quality of their fish.. Not a coincidence!

Nowadays, with the destruction and pollution of of the best Daphnia ponds, it has become an impossible task to find fish safe Daphnia without purchasing or culturing yourself. But we have you covered. Disease free, UK sourced Daphnia is what we do well!

At this time of the year, Bloodworm and Glassworm quality reduces. These larval stages of Midges begin to pupate, fly off and renew the lifecycle for the coming season. So it is incredibly important to be prepared and move over to a different selection of livefoods at this time. Brine Shrimp and Blackworm are available all year round, in an effort to help combat this seasonal shortage and continue to offer a selection of live foods for your fishes.

In fact, in the mid 1900s, Brine shrimp culture really began, as a response to these seasonal issues, with the idea of a year round, highly nutritional, disease free and palatable product in mind. The rest was history!

We recognise that live foods go through trends, often pushed by influencers/youtubers etc, but don't sleep on the originals! there is a reason they have been around for so long!!
