River Shrimps. Or more accurately, Feeder Shrimps, have gained increased popularity as a live food over the last 10 years. And rightly so! But few truly understand these shrimps. Here are a few interesting facts about our River Shrimps:
The Taxonomic name is Palaemon varians and is found throughout coastal regions of Europe, including the Mediterranean, Baltic and North Sea
This species is Brackish, meaning they prefer low strength seawater. The adults can tolerate freshwater for a very short period of time, but will not survive in it for long. They can tolerate marine conditions for a few weeks.
During spring, the females release larvae which drift out to sea and survive on plankton, before settling and return to shore
All our shrimps are sourced from within the UK!
The jerky movement of these shrimps is simply irresistible to predatory species such as Snakeheads, Pufferfish and Lionfish. These are also excellent foods for Axolotls!
Our shrimps are gut loaded prior to leaving us - extra nutrition!
Shrimps should be used straight away, or can be kept in a cool aquarium with a specific gravity of 1.010 and plenty of aeration
